  • When any of us approaches to the sea to bathe, or simply goes for a walk on wet sand, most people are not aware that this watery liquid that forms the sea has an age of about 4,500 million years, almost as many as the planet we inhabit. So, this huge ecosystem was witness of the majority of both geological and biological events that took place on this planet. Neither are we aware that when we leave the bath, in these saline waters, we carry on our body a lot of cells of very small size, many of them microscopic, known as fitoplankton. These marine microorganisms are the foundation of food chains in this environment. Much of our food, that one that comes from the sea, depends on the abundance of these small photosynthetic organisms.
Although the focus is Oceanography and Marine Biology, this is a book that could qualify for multidisciplinary, since, as the story about Noah's ark, it covers many other aspects, not only biological, ranging from historical stories about navigation, Erastótenes and sphericity of the earth, investigations by Alfred Wegener on plate tectonics and its influence on our planet until Thor Heyerdal and the expedition of the Kon-tiki, the conquest of the Blue Planet by humans, hunting of whales, etc.
